Academic Overview

Dr. Acierno has maintained continuous extramural funding for the past 29 years, during which time he has published over 250 research articles and directly mentored 20 future research faculty while co-mentoring an additional 15 future researchers. He has held principal investigator roles on multiple major federally funded research awards funded by the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, National Institute of Justice, National Institute on Aging, and National Institute of Mental Health, among others. He regards mentorship of junior faculty and students in academic research as the most important activity at this stage of his career.

Research Leadership

His work spans three major research areas: elder mistreatment epidemiology, post-disaster epidemiology, and Veteran and military population treatment outcome research, with a particular emphasis on telehealth. Throughout his academic career, he has maintained a consistent record of publication in major psychological journals, served on multiple editorial boards, and reviewed widely across peer-reviewed journals. He has held principal investigator roles on numerous federally funded awards and has built a body of work that is both scientifically rigorous and grounded in real-world need.

Elder Mistreatment and Trauma Outcomes

Dr. Acierno’s work in elder mistreatment has helped establish the field’s methodological foundation. He has developed and applied epidemiological methods to the assessment of elder abuse and led studies ranging from regional demonstration projects to national prevalence investigations. This body of work has contributed to a clearer understanding of how violence, neglect, and exploitation affect older adults over time. More broadly, his work reflects a sustained focus on populations whose needs may be underestimated despite significant vulnerability, including older adults affected by trauma, violence, and disaster.

Veterans, Telehealth, and Real-World Treatment Models

For more than 20 years, Dr. Acierno has engaged in patient-centered treatment outcome research using technology to strengthen behavioral interventions, and for more than a decade he has focused specifically on Veteran populations. Drawing on direct provider experience, he has emphasized practical, real-world treatments delivered by real-world providers. His work has included home-based telehealth models and research demonstrating that effective trauma-focused treatment can be delivered in ways that meet patients where they are, rather than limiting care to traditional clinic-based settings.

Clinical, Community, and Administrative Leadership

In addition to his research, Dr. Acierno has provided extensive consultation and service to agencies that support victims of violence, older adults, and community-based systems of care. He has also held major administrative leadership roles involving large research portfolios, faculty supervision, program development, and strategic planning for academic growth. His experience spans institutional leadership, trauma-focused clinical service systems, federally funded research administration, and community-facing professional education.

Mentorship and Future-Focused Work

A central focus of Dr. Acierno’s current work is mentorship. He has devoted significant effort to helping post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty, residents, and collaborators build treatment outcome studies, strengthen pilot work, and pursue federal funding. His long-term impact is reflected not only in his own scholarship, but also in the careers, programs, and lines of research he has helped develop.
